I have been thinking about this the last couple of days. I have for years heard the cliche, "they are so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good." What are your thoughts on that statement? Do you agree or disagree and what would that look like? Is that talking about a veiled false piety rooted in pride or legalism or is it an excuse to have worldly behaviors and sinful attitudes?

All depends on what "no earthly good" is referring to. I read it as someone not "called" to reach out to those searching for the truth, nor being approachable by those same truth seekers. However, you will always find these heavenly minded religious zealots at all the church functions, committee meetings, and bible studies..and wait until you taste their brownies!!!
I have always thought the opposite is true- if you are heavenly minded you will be ultimately good here on earth. I don't think you can ever be too heavenly minded....seems to be Paul's thoughts as well in Col. 3:1f....
mike,
I totally agree...my point was more towards the "professional churchgoers", those who may be totally missing the boat by "playing church" and not seeking God's true plan for their life.
